FAERIE TALES: Telling our stories

Multi-disciplinary Arts Festival

AT THE ROUNDHOUSE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Theme: In the presentation of our 2009 festival “Faerie Tales” Pride in Art is asking artists to explore the myths and legends that have shape us and our community. Asking how have Queers been shaped by this mythology? Whether that myth is light, dark, strange or powerful, these whimsical and sometimes political fables can have a far reaching effect upon our collective psyche. The Pride in Art Society challenges artists to look back – into our childhoods, into our histories, into the mists of time – and explore the symbols and archetypes that help us to build these identities. Even in the darkest times of repression and prejudice, Queers have minded the stories of the dominant culture for hints of homo-social and homo-erotic models. Groups like the Radical Faeries have taken negative stereotypes and re-envisioned them to create progressive political statements. Others have taken the male-only society of gnomes, or the warrior society of Amazon women as models for Queer community in the here and now. Where do you find your inspiration: a drag queen Cinderella story, a butch knight in shining amour, or the steadfast love of David and Jonathan? Honorariums will be paid to accepted artists. Whatever your outlook is the Pride in Art Festival is looking for your interpretation, be that 2D or 3D, painting, drawing, photography, film, installation or performance art, all mediums are welcomed.
